The bias of mean field approximation

Résumé
Mean field approximation is a widely used technique to study stochastic systems composed of many interacting objects with applications from theoretical physics to biological models and artificial intelligence. In this talk, I will:
– explain what is mean field approximation by showing examples from queuing theory.
– provide (recent) tools to study the accuracy of this approximation, and in particular its bias.
– discuss refinement of the approximation (linked to moment closure or size expansion methods).
